People also call this a paperwork-only marriage, a registry-style marriage, or a legals-only ceremony.
What a legal-only ceremony looks like
In Australia, a legal marriage still needs:
- an authorised celebrant
- a completed Notice of Intended Marriage
- two witnesses aged 18 or over
- the required legal wording
- the signing of the marriage certificates
That means there is still a ceremony, but it is very short and very simple.
