Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

ID Requirements for Marriage

Private celebrants, not a government registry. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

To get married, each person needs to show evidence of identity and date and place of birth.

Most common document options

Usually, you will need either:

  • a current passport, or
  • a birth certificate plus current photo ID

Photo ID can include a driver licence or another government-issued photo ID.

If you have been married before

You also need evidence that the previous marriage ended, such as:

  • a divorce order, or
  • a death certificate

If your document is not in English

You will usually need a translation by a properly accredited translator.

See translation requirements.

Can we email copies first?

Usually yes. For starting the process and meeting NOIM timing, scanned copies are often enough at first.

But the originals must be sighted before the marriage is solemnised.

What if I do not have a passport or birth certificate?

The law allows some alternatives in limited situations, but it is best to ask us before assuming you are stuck.
