Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

Marriage Certificate Guide

Private celebrants, not a government registry. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

There are different marriage certificates in Queensland, and they are not all used for the same thing.

The certificate you get on the day

The certificate given to you by the celebrant on the day is ceremonial.

It is a keepsake.

It is not the official certificate for proving your marriage to banks, government agencies, or other organisations.

The official marriage certificate

Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages issues the official marriage certificate.

Queensland says you do not automatically receive one after the marriage is registered. You need to apply for it and pay the fee.

Commemorative certificates

Queensland also offers commemorative certificates.

They are keepsakes only and are not official identity documents.

Best practice

Order your official certificate directly from the Queensland Government once your marriage has been registered.

Avoid third-party certificate websites.
